TOOTH EXTRACTION
In dentistry, tooth extraction or exodontia is the removal of a tooth without surgical intervention. Tooth extraction is usually performed under local anesthesia. This numbs the area around the tooth so that it can be extracted. Nowadays, teeth are only extracted as a last resort when they cannot be saved by other methods, lead to overcrowding, or are damaged by other injuries.
Who Is Tooth Extraction Suitable For?
Tooth extraction is an appropriate procedure for seriously damaged or infected teeth, teeth that are causing crowding in the jaw, or to allow for the placement of dentures.
Tooth extraction is not recommended if the teeth can still be saved by other methods, such as root canal treatment.
Time Required
The duration of stay in the clinic is only 1-2 hours. Some patients wait a few days to return due to possible discomfort. This is especially recommended for patients who are having multiple teeth extracted. However, the average length of stay in Turkey is 1 day.
Before Tooth Extraction
Before the procedure, the area around the tooth to be removed is locally anesthetized so that patients do not feel any pain. If several teeth are extracted, several areas are anesthetized accordingly.
How Is The Treatment Carried Out?
In most cases, the dentist will simply remove the tooth with forceps once the anesthesia takes effect. If the tooth is trapped, it will be necessary to cut into the gum to sufficiently expose it and then remove it.
Duration of treatment: The extraction of a tooth takes between 30 and 90 minutes. A simple tooth extraction takes about 30 minutes, but more complex surgical removals can take up to 90 minutes. Treatment is regularly performed under local anesthesia.
After Tooth Extraction
After the procedure, the dentist may prescribe an antibiotic to prevent infection, and the patient should rest. If the extraction site is bleeding, it is advised to bite down on a clean cotton cloth. Ideally, a blood clot will form over the donor site to aid in healing. To avoid disrupting the healing process, smoking as well as eating hot or cold foods are prohibited. Also, do not eat on the side of the mouth where the tooth was extracted to avoid contaminating the site with food debris, bleeding and infection. If the blood clot dissolves, exposing the bone, it may cause pain. If this is the case, the dentist will apply an anesthetic cover until the area heals.
Removal of teeth may result in minor pain. Irritation of the treated area should subside within 1 to 2 days.
Possible Risks
Possible risks include bleeding, infection, swelling, damage to the jawbone, injury to nerves, dry alveolus (inflammation of the tooth socket), and exposure of the sinuses if the upper teeth are removed.
