LIPEDEMA LIPOSUCTION
Through surgical treatment of lipedema by liposuction, patients regain freedom from pain, a significant aesthetic improvement and a better quality of life. Lipedema is a slowly progressing disease of the vascular system. Affected patients suffer from swelling and fluid retention on the legs and thighs, which can cause severe pain. Externally, lipedema can be recognized by the fact that the person’s body is of normal weight or slim and only the thighs and buttocks are excessively pronounced. In some cases, the upper arms are also affected.
The cause is a fat distribution disorder, which leads to a visual, but also physical and psychological burden for the patient. Lipedema thus has an impact on all areas of life. Lipedema is clearly a disease and should not be confused with poor eating habits or lack of discipline.
Conservative treatment consisting of manual lymphatic drainage and the wearing of compression bandages unfortunately only brings minor relief from the symptoms. Sports and dieting also hardly lead to any improvement. A promising treatment method for lipedema, which achieves much better results, is liposuction of the affected areas.
Who Is Lipedema Liposuction Suitable For?
Liposuction is nowadays a standard treatment for lipedema. Healthy individuals without other underlying diseases can have liposuction performed at any time. For smokers or patients with serious pre-existing conditions, such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, or cancer, a thorough evaluation is required.
The younger the patient, the more promising and recommended the treatment.
The treatment is not recommended for patients who are very overweight or have infections or wound healing disorders. The treatment is not a substitute for exercise or a cure for general obesity.

Time Required
The length of stay at the clinic is 1 day. The procedure is usually performed on an outpatient basis. If a larger amount of fat is removed, patients stay at our clinic for up to 3 days as inpatients.
Patients should obtain travel advice from their attending surgeon and are advised to wait at least 4 days before flying home and to take precautions against deep vein thrombosis (DVT).
Before Lipedema Liposuction
Before the procedure, there is a detailed consultation. Here, patients learn everything about the exact procedure and receive information about possible risks. In addition, a manual lymphatic drainage should take place shortly before the procedure. After liposuction, it is important to wear a fitted compression for at least 1 month. However, the worst symptoms of lipedema are significantly reduced after liposuction. The affected individuals regain more quality of life and self-confidence.
Patients are advised to refrain from smoking, reduce alcohol consumption and refrain from taking blood-thinning medications, such as aspirin, in the week before the surgery.
How Is Lipedema Liposuction Carried Out?
Liposuction is performed with the SlimLipo® laser using the tumescent technique. In this process, a solution based on physiological saline, local anesthesia (lidocaine) and adrenaline is infiltrated into the area to be suctioned beforehand. After 20-30 minutes of exposure time, the fat is melted with the laser cannula. The fat cells are melted by the radiated energy of the laser. This is a particularly tissue-sparing procedure because the fat cells are selectively removed, but the surrounding tissue, consisting of collagen fibers, remains intact. The energy of the laser additionally stimulates the collagen fibers to form more firmly. The fused fatty tissue is then gently suctioned out with fine cannulas.
Duration of treatment and anesthesia: Such a procedure is often performed under local anesthesia, but general anesthesia is also possible. Liposuction lasts between 1 and 2 hours. If large areas are treated, the procedure may take longer.
After Lipedema Liposuction
Depending on the amount of lipedema liposuction, patients may be discharged or may stay overnight in the hospital. Patients should rest, keep wounds clean and avoid activities such as swimming or sunbathing. The doctor may recommend special compression garments to wear and prescribe an antibiotic.
When the anesthesia wears off, there may be some pain, but this can be treated well with conventional painkillers. Incisions are usually small, resulting in minimal scarring. Any swelling or bruising will heal after a week, and final results will be visible after about 4 to 6 weeks.
Possible Risks
Possible risks may include numbness in the treated areas, mild tingling, swelling and bruising.
