Breast reduction, also known as mammoplasty, is about more than just good looks or an aesthetic correction. Before Breast Reduction

Before the operation, the surgeon will discuss with you the desired shape and size of the future breast. He will also inform you about the procedure and possible risks.  In preparation for general anesthesia, patients are not allowed to eat anything or drink moderately for about 12 hours before the procedure.

How Is the Treatment Carried Out?

During the surgery, the incision may be made at the bottom of the breast, which then extends to the nipple. However, this results in a visible scar. The incision can also be made around the areola, the areola, and then passed downward toward the underside of the breast.

After the incision, excess tissue, fat deposits and skin are removed. Sometimes the fatty tissue is also removed by liposuction. In some cases, it may be necessary to reposition the nipple afterwards to achieve a natural result. Once excess fat and tissue are removed, the incision is closed with sutures.

Treatment time and anesthesia: The procedure is usually performed under general anesthesia. For smaller reductions, local anesthesia may be sufficient in some circumstances. The duration for breast reduction includes about 2 to 3 hours.

After Breast Reduction

After the procedure, patients usually spend the first night in the hospital. Drains are usually placed in the breast to allow the wound secretions to drain. However, the drains can be removed the following day. Minor swelling as well as slight pain during the first 2 to 3 days after the procedure are completely normal. Depending on the type and extent of the surgery, some restrictions in movement can also be expected during the first week after surgery. During the first week after surgery, the breast is supported by a special bandage to keep the tissue still and relieve pressure. For the time after, the surgeon recommends wearing a comfortable and supportive sports bra.

Possible Risks

Possible risks of the procedure include infection, bleeding, scarring and nerve damage to the breast. Likewise, loss of ability to breastfeed is a possible result of breast reduction.
