EYELID LIFT (BLEPHAROPLASTY)
Small procedure – big effect! Eyelid lifting provides a fresh and radiant look. Sagging upper eyelids, also called drooping eyelids, and sagging lower eyelids not only make the eyes look tired and heavy, but also make the entire face appear many years older than it actually is. The cause of excess skin can be factors such as a genetic predisposition or simply the natural aging process.
Blepharoplasty involves removing excess skin from the eyelids and regulating the fat deposits of the muscle tissue surrounding the eyelids. By removing the excess tissue on the upper eyelids, the eyes appear more open and clear again. Tightening of the lower eyelid also provides a more alert and rejuvenated look.
Eyelid lift is the third most common aesthetic procedure in the world after liposuction and breast augmentation with silicone implants. The reasons for this are obvious. The eyes are the center of our face and are at the heart of expression and facial expressions. We communicate through our eyes and express emotions through them. If our eyes appear tired and aged, this expression is transferred to our entire external appearance.
Both the eyelid and the skin of the rest of the eye area are much thinner and more sensitive than the skin on other parts of the body. Unfortunately, this area of our face is therefore where the effects of aging first become visible. However, eyelid lifting does not always have an exclusively aesthetic background. Often, excess skin restricts the patient’s field of vision to such an extent that an eyelid lift also makes medical sense.
Muscle tissue, fatty tissue, lacrimal gland, lacrimal flow system and supporting tissue – all these fine areas of the eye are highly sensitive. Therefore, patients should only consult experienced plastic surgeons for optimal results. Blepharoplasty can be performed separately for the upper eyelid and the lower eyelid, or combined in one procedure.
Who Is Blepharoplasty Suitable For?
An eyelid lift is suitable for anyone who feels negatively affected by the sagging eye area, both in terms of aesthetic perception and by an impairment of the field of vision.
Time Required
Patients can leave the clinic on the same day. It is recommended to spend a few days on site and rest before traveling home.
Before the Blepharoplasty
For all patients considering blepharoplasty, however, a detailed examination of the eyes should be performed in advance to take into account any complaints or possible pre-existing conditions. An intensive preliminary consultation with the surgeon is also advisable for eyelid lift surgery.
It is important that patients do not enter the treatment with false expectations. Both the upper and lower eyelids can be tightened and thus rejuvenated, but dark circles under the eyes are only partially eliminated and other unwanted signs of aging, such as crow’s feet or sunken eyebrows, also remain for the most part after blepharoplasty.
How Is the Treatment Carried Out?
Blepharoplasty is usually performed under local anesthesia. Since the patient is not asleep under local anesthesia, it is both more comfortable and safer for the patient, and also better for the doctor, since the patient’s cooperation is required. The surgeon may ask the patient to open and close the eyes, look up and down during surgery to check the required symmetry adjustments, as the eyelids are dynamic tissue. Surgical incisions are made primarily at natural lines, such as the crease on the lid for the upper lids or the thin line at the lower lash line for the lower lid. The incisions are closed with very fine stitches and a special technique so that no scars are visible later.
Upper eyelids and lower eyelids can be corrected in the same session or separately. If eyelid ptosis or eyelid deformity is present during eyelid aesthetics, they should be corrected in the same session.
Duration of treatment and anesthesia: Local anesthesia on the eyelids is perfectly sufficient for this procedure. The duration of the operation is between 1 and 2 hours, depending on the type and extent.
After the Eyelid Lift
After the operation, the wounds are protected with special plasters and dressings. However, patients can see normally and have no or at most moderate pain, which can be quickly relieved with a normal painkiller.
During the first few days after eyelid surgery, patients may experience swelling, bruising and mild itching at the incision sites due to the trauma. Cooling the eyes and treating with topical drops and ointments will quickly provide relief.
Patients are able to read, write, and watch television from the first day after surgery, despite mild swelling that sometimes limits the field of vision. After about 3 days, patients can resume normal daily activities and even go to work. Nevertheless, it is advisable to avoid heavy physical exertion and sports for about 2 to 3 weeks. After 1 week, bruising and swelling will have subsided completely.
The stitches are removed after about 7 to 10 days. Make-up may be applied to the eyelids again 1 to 2 weeks later. Contact lenses can be worn again about 1 week after the stitches are removed.
Possible Risks
As possible risks of eyelid lift, infections may occur and excessive wound reaction (keloid) may form.
