BREAST IMPLANTS FOR A BETTER BODY SENSATION?
Many women choose to have breast augmentation with breast implants to optimize their appearance and improve their self-esteem. Patients seeking breast implants should be at least 18 years of age, as breasts can continue to develop into the late teen years.
The most commonly used implants are filled with either silicone gel or saline and can be round or teardrop-shaped. Although the substances differ on the inside, both types of implants have a silicone exterior. Saline implants contain sterile saline solutions. This type of implant is initially placed empty into the breast. If the implant then lies optimally, it is filled with the saline solution. However, many women prefer silicone implants because they appear more natural compared to saline implants.
The best possible incision site is discussed and agreed upon with the surgeon prior to surgery. Silicone implants require a larger incision compared to the incision required for saline implants, so there will be a slightly larger scar. An implant is usually inserted behind the milk ducts, so patients can still breastfeed with breast implants.
Who Are Breast Implants Suitable For?
Breast augmentation with breast implants is recommended to patients,
Who suffer from underdeveloped breasts,
Who wish to have larger breasts
Who underwent breast reduction after mastectomy,
Who are undergoing gender reassignment from male to female.
Time Required
The stay in the clinic is max. 1 day. An overnight stay may be required, but many patients are able to leave the clinic on the day of surgery. The average length of stay in Turkey is about 1 week. The surgeon recommends the patients to wait at least 7 days before returning home.
Before Breast Augmentation
Prior to breast implantation, the patient first presents to the attending surgeon to discuss the details of the procedure. During this consultation, the shape, size, and material composition of the implant are determined, and the incision site (axilla, under the breast, or through the areola of the nipple) and position (“subglandular” over the muscle or “submuscular” under the muscle) are discussed.
Before the surgery, it is important not to take certain medications for 2 weeks (aspirin and certain anti-inflammatory drugs), which could increase bleeding. Our doctors also advise patients to refrain from smoking cigarettes before and after surgery, as this can delay the healing process.
Patients are also instructed not to eat or drink anything on the day of the procedure in preparation for anesthesia. It is recommended to purchase a comfortable sports bra for after surgery. We advise women to buy a larger size so that the bra will fit immediately after surgery.
How Is The Treatment Carried Out?
Once the patient is under anesthesia, the surgeon makes the incision through which the implant is inserted. Breast implants can be inserted through the armpit or through an incision under the breast as well as around the areola (the outside of the nipple), resulting in minimal scarring. Where the incision is made and the implant inserted depends on the size of the implant and may vary from patient to patient. The implant can be inserted either under the breast tissue or under the pectoral muscle. Once inserted, the incision is then closed with sutures.
Duration of treatment and anesthesia: Usually, the procedure is performed under general anesthesia. In some cases, local anesthesia with intravenous sedation may be sufficient. The operation takes about 1 hour, but in more complex cases (e.g. breast implants with additional breast lift) it can take 2 to 3 hours.
After Breast Augmentation
During the first week after surgery, patients should keep the wound dry and avoid lying on their stomach as much as possible. Similarly, we advise not to exercise or do heavy lifting for at least 4 weeks. Our surgeons recommend wearing a special bra (a comfortable sports bra is a good option) for the first few months.
Finally, the surgeon will attach a surgical drain to the wound opening to allow the wound secretions to drain. However, this is usually removed the next day. After the procedure, women usually experience mild pain. The breasts are still swollen and feel hard. Patients can then return to their hotel for a few days to relax and recover before coming back to the clinic for a final examination.
Possible Risks
Damage to the implant and leakage of the filler material, capsular fibrosis (deformation of the capsular tissue envelope that forms around the implant), back pain, scarring, infection.
