TUMMY TUCK (ABDOMINOPLASTY)
A smooth, toned abdomen is an achievable desire even after weight loss and pregnancies thanks to an abdominoplasty. An abdominoplasty, also known as a tummy tuck, is a surgical procedure that removes excess skin that has lost its elasticity and fat. The abdomen is then shaped to be firmer and more defined. An abdominoplasty is most commonly performed on women who suffer from a sagging abdomen after one or more pregnancies. However, abdominoplasty is also suitable for patients who have lost a great deal of body weight to remove excess skin from the abdomen and redefine the center of the body.
Who Is Abdominoplasty Suitable For?
A tummy tuck is suitable for patients who desire tight abdominal skin and a flat abdominal wall. This is often the case after pregnancies or severe weight loss. The prerequisite for a tummy tuck is that body growth has been completed and that the patient is in good general health.
Abdominoplasty is not recommended if the same result can be achieved through exercise, or for patients suffering from underlying medical conditions.
Time Required
The length of stay in the clinic is 1 day. Our surgeons also recommend waiting about 1 week to return home. A final check-up with the surgeon is done before the trip. Precautions against the risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) should also be taken.
Before the Tummy Tuck
In an extensive preliminary consultation with the surgeon, both the desired result, the procedure of the operation and the measures to be taken after the operation are discussed. Patients must arrange for a companion to pick them up after the surgery and stay with them for the first night after the procedure.
Also, patients are asked not to smoke or take blood thinning medications, such as aspirin, for at least 2 weeks before and after the surgery.
How Is the Treatment Carried Out?
There are two different types of abdominoplasty surgeries that can be performed: a complete abdominoplasty or a partial or mini-abdominoplasty.
A complete abdominoplasty involves two incisions, one at the belly button and one across the abdomen (bikini line). This surgery may require that the navel be repositioned. Excess skin and tissue are removed and the abdominal muscles are tightened with dissolvable sutures. It may be necessary to place a wound drain after surgery to allow wound secretions to drain freely.
In a partial or mini-abdominoplasty, only a smaller incision is made compared to the incision in a complete abdominoplasty. This type of surgery is aimed at patients who have fatty tissue below the belly button. Both surgeries often include liposuction as part of the procedure. Once the tightening is complete, the surgeon closes the wound with small sutures.
Treatment duration and anesthesia: An abdominoplasty takes place under general anesthesia. The duration of treatment is about 2 to 3 hours.
After the Tummy Tuck
Patients should rest and recover during the first week and also avoid heavy lifting or physical activity. Swelling and mild abdominal numbness, as well as mild to moderate pain, are quite normal. Many tummy tuck procedures also require the use of surgical drains, which are inserted into the abdomen to drain fluid. These are usually removed after 1 week. During this time, patients must be especially careful about showering and dressing. Patients are then fully socially acceptable again after 1 week
Possible Risks
Possible risks may include infection, scarring, bruising, abdominal numbness, blood clots, and hypersensitive reactions to general anesthesia.
